So it’s possible he could have been like “Oh, tummy rumbles telling me I’m gonna kick the bucket soon, wonder if I still have any DNA wandering around out there let’s go check on up on them and doo doo doo turn some light switches on”. That said, it’s 100% proven that Raizen can actively influence or manipulate his shared genes to communicate with, and even take full control of, Yusuke at a significant distance (another very awesome, and potentially hilarious, concept that I’ve always felt needs to be explored more in fanworks). I take a bit of issue with this interpretation because Raizen would have lived well past 44 generations later if he hadn’t elected to starve himself to death, which he wouldn’t have known back when he originally conceived a child with the kudakusushi. I recall hearing or reading somewhere in English the suggestion that Raizen actively manipulated his own genes to awaken after 44 generations, assuming that he (Raizen) would die around that time. It’s noted by the SDF ex-captain Otake that demons can manipulate their own genes to awaken in their descendants after certain intervals of time (and that most do so for amusement/curiosity’s sake). Triggers, genetic manipulation, active vs inactive genes The idea is that there are inactive genes not expressed outwardly that are reawakened by some sort of trigger/stimulus (e.g., whatever other genes suppressing the inactive gene “fail” or are somehow overridden due to mutation etc.). A commonly-cited example is whales that are discovered with rudimentary hind legs. (Bonus: it sounds super cool.)Īs everybody knows (thanks to the helpful explanation in manga/anime the manga describes it as genes skipping generations), atavism is basically an organism exhibiting traits of distant ancestors. I believe this is the term used in the official English translation of the manga. Probably a better term would just be to call him a demon throwback. It’d be far more accurate to call Yusuke “part-demon” since he’s something like 1/88th demon (I think … feel free to fix my poor math lol) but that sounds lazy as well and still doesn’t give a strong sense of the full picture. The only person in all of this who could actually be labelled that is the original unidentified child of Raizen and the kudakusushi 44 (43?) generations ago. (oooh I think this is the first time I used the read more option on here ahhhh) I’m not a scientist or anything, I just like reading and writing and thinking too much, so feel free to correct me or share more intriguing ideas to fill in the holes in my thinking, or expand on my half-baked ruminations! :3 It got me thinking about how the term “half-demon” appears a lot in fanworks (as you can see, I’m certainly guilty of it too), and while convenient, really obscures some fascinating concepts that are wonderful jumping points to learning more about the natural world - and not to mention fuel for more interesting fanmade extensions. I also used the term half-demon in a couple of other art posts.īut calling Yusuke half-anything is an incredibly simplistic, inaccurate and just plain lazy way for me to describe his genetic inheritance. In my Kings of Makai post, I described Yusuke as “the only half-human of the demon kings” because it was fast and easy to write and everything was getting looooong and I wanted to get my post out. Something stupid that has been bothering me for a while, and naturally triggered an essay in my head that went outta control and now I share it with you lol.
